Our Facebook and Instagram followers voted and decided the top ice cream spots in the Capital District: Stella’s Creamery, Guptill’s Ice Cream and Snowman Ice Cream! We rated each spot based on their soft serve vanilla ice cream and their signature ice cream sundae.

Stella’s Creamery - Schenectady, NY - https://www.facebook.com/StellasCreamery/
Stella’s Creamery is unique out of our top three ice cream spots because they offer frozen custard. Custard contains more egg yolk than traditional ice cream, which is what gives it a smoother, richer, denser, and creamier texture. But you have to eat it fast! Custard tends to be kept at a warmer freezer temp (about 8 degrees warmer!), so it’ll melt quicker. Stella’s had lots of different custard flavor options and sundaes to choose from.
Their signature custard to win us over is the apple pie sundae. It has a vanilla custard base with a cinnamon apple topping with graham crackers, caramel topped with whipped cream and a cherry. This sundae is perfect for fall. This was definitely our favorite sundae of all the places we visited. It hit so many of the fall flavors we wanted. All that was missing was a pumpkin spice latte or a hot spiced cider.
Guptill’s Ice Cream - Cohoes, NY - https://www.facebook.com/Guptillsicecream/
Guptill’s is a large, cash-only ice cream spot that offers the most flavor options out of all the ice cream spots—82 different flavors.
Guptill’s signature dish was the hot fudge brownie sundae. It was a warm brownie topped with your choice of ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream and a cherry. We requested they give us the best combo of ice cream for our sundae and they chose peanut butter and cookie dough ice cream. We really enjoyed this decadent sundae. The ice cream had chunks of peanut butter cups, and the cookie dough had a good amount of cookie dough balls. The rich, warmed brownie with the mix of ice cream and hot fudge made this a great, classic sundae that was big enough to share…though we suspect you won’t want to!
Snowman Ice Cream - Troy, NY - http://www.thesnowmanicecream.com/
Snowman’s has premium ice cream homemade ice cream daily and a different pair of delicious soft serve flavors each week you can enjoy separately or together in a fun twist..
Snowman’s best ice cream dish was the cookie monster sundae. The core flavor, Cookie Monster, is a unique take on a classic ice cream flavor: a blue cookies & cream with both Oreos and Chip’s Ahoy! This sundae is called the “Cookie Monster” sundae for a reason—It was topped with even more Oreos & Chips Ahoy. It will satisfy your need for a sweet ice cream with a crunch. Their ice cream held up the best in the 90 degrees and took the longest to melt.
The Winner - Stella’s Creamery
All of our contenders were really close, but our favorite ice cream spot in the Capital District was Stella’s Creamery. They had the best the most natural flavored, creamy vanilla soft serve.
