What are the different types of EV charging?

Charging 101

Level 1 Charging

Level 1: Portable Home EV Charging

This portable charger typically comes with your car and plugs into a standard 110v outlet. It generally adds 5-6 miles of range per hour and is sufficient to charge the US average daily range in the overnight.

Level 2 Charging

Level 2: Home EV Charging

Best option for home charging. This charging station is installed in your home and plugs into a 240v outlet. It adds 30-40 miles of range per hour, making it ideal for home use.

Level 3 Charging

Level 3: Public EV Fast Charging

The fastest charger option, found only in public places and a great option for road trips. It is usually more expensive than charging at home. It can charge an EV in 20-40 minutes on average.

Level 1 Charging: Easy & Convenient

Level 1 charging is simple and is the charger that comes with your vehicle. Just plug your EV or PHEV into a regular wall outlet to start.

In many cases, an overnight charge on a Level 1 charger will provide enough range for your daily commute. If you drive less than 50 miles per day on average, Level 1 home EV charging could be the perfect solution for you!

Level 2: Faster at-home charging

Charging your EV or PHEV at home is faster with a Level 2 charger. Most charging stations are compatible with all EVs and PHEVs, require installation, and can typically charge an EV in 4-8 hours (even less for PHEVs).

Level 2 EV charging is also more convenient. You can charge directly from your home and control your charger from a mobile device. Use smart charging to schedule when to charge your electric car and manage your energy usage to save on electricity.

Level 2 Charging

Level 3: fills your EV up in minutes!

Direct-current fast charger (DCFC), or public Level 3 charging, adds significant range in short period of time with some EVs and PHEVs able to charge from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes.

Ideal for quick top-ups during long trips, at highway rest stops, and in urban areas where fast turnaround times are necessary. Most DCFC chargers can supply from 50 kW up to over 350 kW!
