Apple recently laid their plans out for the next generation of CarPlay. For those of you who aren't familiar with CarPlay, it allows iPhone users to control and view phone-based apps through their car's dashboard. Soon, CarPlay will take over your entire car. Keep reading to learn more about what's next to come from the tech giant! 

During Apple's keynote presentation on Monday June 6th the company detailed significant updates to its CarPlay platform. With more vehicles integrating more displays these days it makes sense to see this as the companies next big move. 

What to Expect 

The idea is to make CarPlay into more of a whole-car interface rather than the phone-mirroring infotainment system it is today. The takeover will allow users to adjust climate controls, activate heated seats, or tune the radio directly through the platform. All without having to leave Apple's UI. 

For vehicles with dashboard displays rather than analog gauges the software will read and display real-time data.  Taking over a car's instrument cluster, users will be able to see their current speed, fuel, navigation details, and other common bits of information as well. 

Users will be able to customize the style and layout of their vehicle's dashboard display.  A range of themes and layouts will be available to give a more unified, Apple inspired design that can adapt to fit different screen sizes within different vehicles. Different widgets will also be available to add to dashboards and infotainment screens from an iPhone such as navigation, notifications, weather, calendars, and more. 

Stay in the Know

Compatible vehicles will be revealed in late 2023. However, several manufacturers that plan to support the new system are as Nissan, Honda and INFINITI. Apple hasn't yet gotten into specifics regarding the update but more information regarding the next generation of CarPlay will be shared in the future.
