Hyundai first introduced the term Ioniq which brings together "ion" and "unique" when the company announced Project Ioniq; a long-term research and development project focused on eco-friendly mobility. Born from Project Ioniq in 2016, Hyundai launched the Ioniq vehicle. Today the Ioniq is known as a compact sedan with three different powertrain options; all-electric, plug-in hybrid, and standard hybrid. After today, the name will become a sub-brand for the Hyundai Motor Group's electric vehicle line-up!
A New Era
The creation of Hyundai's Ioniq brand is in response to the fast-growing market demand which accelerates the company's plan to lead the global EV (electric vehicle) market. To fulfill Ioniq's brand mission, Hyundai plans to to combine its current EV capabilities which include ultra-fast charging, spacious interior, and battery-supplied power - with future innovations for a seamless experience. The Ioniq brand is creating a futuristic feeling line-up which will ride on the Electric Global Modular Platform (EGMP). This means vehicles in the Ioniq line-up will all have a fast charging capability and plentiful driving range. It will also allow for designers to play around with the vehicles interior, including highly adjustable seats and wireless connectivity. Their goal is to expand this platform across various different vehicle sizes and shapes!
Leading The Pack
Three new models are expected to hit dealerships over the next four years with more innovative models to follow. In the coming years, Hyundai plans to introduce the Ioniq 5 in early 2021, the Ioniq 6 in 2022, and the Ioniq 7 in 2024. Fun fact; under the new Ioniq brand the EV models will be numerically named, even numbers will be used for sedans while odd numbers for SUV's!

These three vehicles are expected to be based off previous vehicle concepts which include a compact hatch based on the 45 concept, a sedan based on the Prophecy concept, and last but not least an SUV. There are currently no current concepts that the Ioniq 7 will be based upon but we've been provided a bit of a hint in the release photo.

Their goal is to sell $1 Million electric vehicles by 2025 and hold a 10% share to become the global leader in EV sales. The launch of the Ioniq electric vehicle brand reinforces the company's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and clean mobility. The Ioniq brand creates new balance between life-style solutions and environmental performance.
